What the site does today
This site is written by hand, which keeps it small and keeps the markup plain. These are the things it does today, and each of them is checked before a change goes live.
Structure
Headings and landmarks that describe the page.
- One main heading per page, with the rest in order under it
- A header, one main region and a footer on every page
- Real headings, lists and buttons rather than styled boxes
- Images carry text alternatives
Keyboard and focus
No mouse needed anywhere on the site.
- A skip link to the content as the first tab stop
- Every link, button and form field reachable by tabbing
- A visible focus ring on each stop, in both themes
- Touch targets sized for a thumb on a phone
Reading and motion
Comfortable in either theme, calm by default.
- A light theme and a dark theme, both fully designed, with light as the resting state and your choice remembered on this device
- Text and background colours drawn from one checked palette
- Motion collapses when your device asks for reduced motion, and nothing disappears with it
- Fonts served from this site, so text does not wait on anyone else
What has not been checked
The site is designed to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, and level AA is the standard it aims at. It has not been reviewed by anyone outside Spaced Consulting, so this page makes no claim to conform to any level of those guidelines. Saying otherwise without an independent review would be a claim rather than a fact.
Two gaps are worth naming. The site has not been walked through with screen readers on real assistive technology, and it has not been tested on a spread of real phones and tablets beyond the sizes checked in a browser. Automated checks and one pair of eyes catch a great deal and they do not catch everything.
Where something does turn out to be in the way, fixing it comes before adding anything new.
